FREE books, Greek lentil soup and a charming little chapel

Eating heavy, meaty and fatty foods during the holidays can be taxing for the body. Once Christmas Day was over, I already knew it was time to go all vegetarian for a while. Until the New Year, at least. So I had the loveliest light meal on Boxing Day, which I thought I’d share with you. When my father sat at the table he dug straight into the raw onion squares which he enjoys enormously. He never has lentils of any kind without a side dish of raw onion and taught my British husband to ask this Greek wife to do the same in our home too. Not that I complain! The benefits of onion are well known and many.

Andy made sausage rolls for Christmas (he calls them ‘pigs in blankets’) and drizzled them with honey. You can see in the photo some of the leftovers. I didn’t care for them and it was interesting to see my family trying them. My father was like me and turned up his nose, but my sister and her family, being big meat eaters, honoured the side dish enormously. Still, Andy got to eat most of them. It’s a British thing, apparently. I wouldn’t know, LOL! Luckily, he won’t be making them again till next Christmas, phew! Not that I mind what he eats, but if he cooks those again and it’s just the two of us, he’ll be eating the lot on his own, LOL!

Back to the lentil meal – I added some rice in it (just a tablespoon) to add goodness. The combination of lentils and cereal of any kind gives the body complete protein, and is therefore great for providing the body with energy. Herbs and spices gave the meal plenty of aroma.

This chapel is a lovely new addition to our beautiful seafront in my little town of Nea Peramos. It was sanctified by a priest shortly after its installation and its name is–what else?–St. Nicholas. What could be more apt than the name of the protector of seamen when the church is situated at a marina, right? It’s so charming and I’m looking forward to a chance to visit it inside. The only problem is it was placed at the worst spot ever, as you can see here, which showed the moment it rained heavily. I’ve seen the seafront’s many ducks gather right there to drink when it rains – LOL!

Earlier photo at the spot where the chapel was placed

But, hey! I hear the council is busy taking remedial action. Let’s hope! St Nicholas deserves to be visited by people with dry feet 😛 Go below to read my newsletter. You’ll find in there more photos from the seafront that I took that day. Enjoy 🙂

FREE books, pink skies and more feline naughtiness!

In an earlier post. I showed you Sissi’s currently preferred spot for catching birds. My husband took this photo the other day when he ventured outside, first thing in the morning. He took it to show me the small bits of feathers that were scattered everywhere before clearing it all up. Thankfully, he saved me from the sight of the poor birdie itself. By the time he’d found it it was much too late to change its sad fate.

On a happier note, here is a feeder my husband rustled up for Sissi and her mother, Loulou, so they could get some sustenance during our short breaks away from home last month. This meant we only had to ask our kindly neighbour to replenish the water bowl. Sissi went in straight to the feeder to eat when we placed it outside the first time, while Loulou, always skittish and over-careful, took a few moments to be convinced to go near it, let alone eat. Once she realized it had neither claws nor teeth, she was fine haha

In my latest newsletter, I am sharing a bunch of alluring photos, and even a short video, from the unforgettable experience I had of the sunset at Cape Sounio last month.

I make my newsletters fun by sharing photographs from my life in Greece and a bunch of kindle book freebies every time!

Seafood pasta, fun Greek news and free books for all! #funnews #Greece #freebooks

What do you see in this pic? Clams, cockles or kedonia? Whatever you call them, they’re just as yummy! Scroll down for a fabulous pasta recipe that uses this delicious seafood!

My father has now gone to his homeland – the island of Limnos in the Northeast Aegean – to spend the summer there. He makes me jealous on most days by telling me he’s been to the beach for an evening walk and returned home with dinner – the odd big crab to enjoy with his ouzo!

During winter, My father made a new friend, Mr. Dimitris, who loves to harvest seafood from the seafront, here in our little town near Athens. As of the late spring, Mr. Dimitris would stop by to bring my father the odd thing, like the porphuras I mentioned in a previous blog post, or mussels. Now that it’s summertime, he goes harvesting every day and drops in about once a week, bearing gifts straight from the sea, this time to Andy and me, seeing that my father is away.

More often than not, he brings clams these days, much to my delight.

I’ve always had clams raw with a splash of lemon juice and bread. When I was a kid, my father was forever opening them for me with a knife and putting them on my plate saying, ‘Add plenty of lemon! It’ll kill the germs!’ It’s so embedded in my head by now I could never have them raw without the lemon haha. Actually, I suspect there’s truth in this as well!

Anyway, I decided to try something different this time. So I looked for pasta recipes online and found this awesome one for ‘Tartufi di Mare’ which means ‘Truffles of the Sea’ and that’s how the Italians call clams/cockles, apparently! Excited to learn something new, I looked into the recipe and it sounded wonderful. Clams, garlic, white wine, chilly… It just sounded perfect.

 GET THE RECIPE HERE

I’ve now enjoyed this meal a couple times and it was such a success that I had to blog it, after making my own changes that is – i.e. I played with the secondary ingredients a little and changed the steaming procedure as well.

The pasta tastes as if it’s coated in butter. It’s just mouth-wateringly delicious. You’ll just have to try the recipe to see what I mean!

Note: You can use small-size oysters instead (called ‘clams’ in the UK or ‘achivades’ in Greece). These have smooth shells and can have various colors.

The summer has officially started here at last! The sea is a little cool but so inviting, and the sun is scorching hot! We’re having a heatwave right now, temps as high as 40 degrees C. My husband took this photo of me last weekend. That was our first swim near home so it was a quick trip. There are many popular beaches in west Attica that are edged with pine forests, and we’ll be driving out a little further on the weekends from now on. Kineta, Agii Theodori, Alepochori, Psatha, Porto Germeno. So many choices 🙂

Fast tortoises, green bean stew and other fun news from Greece. FREE books for all too!

As it turns out, Aesop lied to us all. Tortoises are a lot faster than he would have us believe. I caught this little guy sprinting down the road Usein-Bolt-style the other day. I share this tortoise encounter along with another (a rather amusing one!) in my latest newsletter.

I packed it with pictures from my life in Greece and even included my traditional recipe for green bean stew. Perfect for the summer!

The secret is to use ripe beef tomatoes. It’s so sweet-tasting it’s unreal.
