Two new books and a Secret Santa

Lady of the Pier, storm 533X800

Hello peeps! November has come and gone, and I’ve been busy getting The Storm, book 3 in The Lady of the Pier trilogy, ready for publication. I am happy to announce the book is now available on Amazon on pre-order. The big day is December 11! Not too long till The Lady discloses her last tragic secrets!

Order it now on Amazon

I promised my readers a great Xmas, and it’s only fair, seeing that I’d been really mean and piling on the heartache all this time for both my heroines!

But that’s not all!

I’m currently keeping busy with the launch of a second book, Poetry from The Lady of the Pier. This mini companion book to the series (approximately 50 pages) is a collection of 10 romantic poems from the trilogy and also includes the bonus short story, “An Old Promise”:

lady of the pier poetry533x800

Joanna boards a flight from JFK to visit the Greek island of Sifnos again after twenty years. All this time, despite the distance and her life’s circumstances, she’s been holding on to precious memories from an old summer love. Now, she’s determined to meet again the man she once left behind, hoping for a chance to prove she never forgot their old promise…

The book contains no spoilers, and readers who are not familiar with the series may equally enjoy it.

I am going to make this available in all bookstores (not just Amazon) in an attempt to attract new readers to the series. For this reason, the kindle will be perma-free. The paperback will be available in all major bookstores.

UPDATE: I am still working with Amazon to drop the price for the poetry ebook from 99c to FREE. In the meantime, you can download it FREE on other major stores, such as:

Kobo: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/ebook/poetry-from-the-lady-of-the-pier
iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/id1064068977
Nook: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/books/1123057439

If you’re an author, please note: I plan to blog a lot in the near future sharing tips for authors and instructions on using various free services, so I hope you’ll stay tuned! These awesome tidbits of information will organize you and make your indie life so much easier!

If you’re a reader, watch this space! Other than continuing to host a new author every Monday, I will keep reviewing the books I read so you can always have great recommendations from me. Remember I only review books if I am going to give them a minimum of 4 stars so you’ll only find here my top recommendations!

Forthcoming interviewees for this month include Martin Crosbie and Mandy Baggot, plus I’ll be reviewing An Almost Perfect Christmas by USA Today bestselling author, Donna Fasano.

Christmas is upon us and I expect many of you will do what I do and shop from Amazon for your loved ones… This year, I had the notion that I should be someone’s Secret Santa among my author friends… To do that, all I need to do is go to Amazon to make my purchases having first visited an author friend’s website. I’ll just click on one of their book links that points to Amazon and which embeds their Amazon Associates affiliate link. This way they will get the  benefit of a small commission. Plenty of giving, wonderful friends to choose from, so I’ll pick one by random and continue to do this by picking a different friend each time I make my Amazon purchases throughout the year.

I strongly urge you, whether you’re an author or a reader, to support an indie author with this small gesture this Christmas. It’s peanuts, but it all  helps!

Should you feel inclined to support me in this way this Holiday Season, simply click on any of my published books on the right sidebar. This will take you to Amazon with my affiliate link so I can get a small commission if you make any purchases on Amazon during that specific visit (no need to buy my book). Thank you 🙂

Have a great day and enjoy the hectic run up to Xmas! And, for those among you who have been following The Lady of the Pier trilogy, I hope you will enjoy the fairy tale ending of The Storm, reading it in a festive room somewhere! Enjoy 🙂

A journey through time to the Brighton seafront

Today, I have a treat for those among you who, like me, are fascinated by time travel stories. What I mostly love about them is the transition that places undergo through time. In this post, I’ll attempt to take you all with me on a virtual journey through time to one of my favorite places: the seafront at Brighton, England – the infamous seaside town where the legendary West Pier once stood. The Pier, that was opened in 1866, has always fascinated me; hence, it’s no surprise that I wound up writing a romantic trilogy, The Lady of the Pier, telling its story while utilizing the Pier itself as the ultimate symbol of wistfulness,  nostalgia, and lost opportunities.

But, don’t let me get all misty. We have an exciting journey ahead of us and time is pressing for us all. For our first stop, let me take you to April 1997 . . . this is when I made my first trip to Brighton on a weekend break (at the time, I was working in Northamptonshire, England). Back then, albeit derelict and out of reach, the West Pier still stood and so, these photos, the only ones I have of the Pier and me in the same frame are precious to me like gold.

(Click on any image to enlarge)

Here are more pictures from that short break I had in Brighton; except for the one picture of the Royal Pavilion and its sublime minarets, all the rest are from the seafront. I hardly wandered away from there throughout my stay in town. You can also see the Brighton Pier, which still stands today, being more recent than the West Pier, and which back then was called Palace Pier.

(Click on any image to enlarge)

The West Pier in 1997: at the pier head, you can see the theatre (the Pavilion) and to the right, the Concert Hall.

I took the following photo with two takes on an old film camera and then glued them together, so excuse the ugly seam (and poor resolution for that matter!). Still, I hope it gives you a good idea of how the seafront looked from the site of the West Pier back in 1997. You can see the Brighton Pier in the distance and the historical Metropole Hotel (big brown building) in the foreground.

Brighton-a1

I was lucky to return once more to Brighton, in New Year’s Eve in 1999, to see The West Pier, more or less, in the same condition. Sadly, I never returned after that. Since the arson attacks and the devastating storms that took place between then and now, all that remains of the West Pier today is a skeletal ruin of its once magnificent theatre (the Pavilion) at the pier head.

(Below image provided courtesy of Ben Nuttall)

The remnant of the theatre is commonly referred to now by the locals as The Old Lady of Brighton, or The Grand Old Lady of Brighton. When I first heard the names a few months ago on Twitter, they brought shivers down my spine since my trilogy is about a spirit attached to the Pier, called The Lady of the Pier. This peculiar coincidence made the story in my head become more real, somehow.

But, let’s forget the past and return to the present time for a while, before I propel us all into the future, shall we?

As I said earlier, the last time I visited Brighton was in 1999, so I was a bit stuck trying to find free images of Brighton’s seafront to post on this site. On the spur of the moment, I visited Twitter and searched for the hashtags #WestPier and #Brighton. I spoke to a few amateur photographers who posted stunning photos of the seafront, and two of them were happy to let me present them on this blog and post their images. One of them is a local of Brighton, Ben Nuttall, the other, as chance would have it, is a fellow Greek called Barbara Mama, visiting Brighton on a holiday break.

Without further ado, I’m delighted to present to you Barbara Mama, an engineer from Athens, and the wonderful photos she took of Brighton’s seafront during her recent holiday in this historical, British town.

(Click on any image to enlarge – following images provided courtesy of Barbara Mama)

Stunning huh? I was delighted to see the Brighton Pier is as popular as ever and that there’s also a big ferris wheel standing on the seafront now. Fantastic!

Before I press my magic buttons to offer you all a glimpse of the future, I must tell you this: the West Pier, or rather what’s left of it, is owned by the West Pier Trust, which nowadays looks to the future with bright hopes. Why? Well, an exciting landmark is being constructed as I write these lines in the same place where the entrance to the West Pier once stood. It’s a revolving, observation tower called i360. Its architects are the same people who brought the world the infamous London Eye. The purpose of the i360 is to give tourists a bird’s eye view of Brighton’s seafront while celebrating the West Pier and keeping its memory alive. The i360 opens in 2016 – not long now!

Here follows a short introduction of Ben Nuttall in his own words. Ben has been kind enough to include in the photos he sent me, a few from the construction of the i360. You’ll be amazed to know that when Ben doesn’t get approached by weird Greek authors pestering him for his photos, he has the BBC itself emailing him to ask for his latest video of Brighton’s extreme weather! No kidding!

Ben Nuttall

My name is Ben Nuttall. I’m 26 years old and live in Hove with my partner and our two cats Chester and Maggie. I moved here 4 years ago for work from Canterbury in Kent and love the vibrancy of Brighton & Hove. Everyone is very chilled out and there’s always something to do. I’m very much an amateur photographer. All the pictures you see here were taken on my iPhone 6 Plus, while out and about during my daily life. I use an app called VSCOcam to capture most of these pictures and add slight edits to them. You can view more of my photos on my Instagram page: Instagram.com/irbenji or on my Twitter: twitter.com/irbenji

And now, here are Ben Nuttall’s amazing photos! Check out that artistic black & white one of the stormy sea. Is it me, or does it resemble a painting? Stunning!

Before I go, to say I’ve had a bit of exciting news from Brighton recently. The Chief Executive of the West Pier Trust, Rachel Clark, bought a copy of The Ebb, book 1 in The Lady of the Pier trilogy, and posted about it on the news page of the West Pier Trust website, recommending it to its members! Yippee! You should have seen me bouncing about like a kangaroo the day she emailed me to let me know. To find out more about the West Pier’s history, to see old photos of its heyday, and to hear the latest on the i360, visit the West Pier Trust site. If you love stories about the past, it will fascinate you! To keep up with the progress of the i360, follow these great Twitter accounts or check out these hashtags:

What is The Lady of the Pier trilogy about?

The Lady of the Pier trilogy tells the stories of Sofia and Laura – two girls from two different worlds who have a mysterious connection. In book 1, although similar in some ways, the two stories are seemingly unrelated. In book 2, they begin to merge and in the concluding volume, The Storm, they become one story. I recommend to start reading from book 1. The Storm is in the editing stage and will be published in December 2015.

The Ebb and my soft spot for Robert Pattinson

LLImage copyright by Laura of #RPWW (Robert Pattinson Worldwide fansite)

Okay, this is a weird world we’re living in! Last week during my promo for The Lady of the Pier – The Ebb, I talked about my favorite actor, Robert Pattinson, during a couple of interviews. I spoke more extensively about him during my blog chat on Kelly Smith Reviews, saying that I’d cast Rob as the hero of my trilogy.

Before I knew it, a Twitter follower from Argentina had picked this up and sent it to a Robert Pattinson fan site, namely RobertPattinsonWorldWide.com (141K followers just on Twitter). The site posted the excerpts from the interview where I mentioned the actor and showcased The Ebb beautifully too, even posted the link to Amazon! Here is this post. The added bonus was that my promo was still on, so the fans had an extra incentive to buy my book. I know that at least a couple of them bought it that day because they tweeted to let me know! The next day I found I had sold 30 books but as I had run ads for my promo too, I can’t tell how many downloads were made by the Rpatz fans. Still, no matter how many I got, I am very grateful to this site and its awesome readers!

Later in the same week, and after the promo had ended, a second fan site got a whiff of the same interview too. These guys posted an even larger part of the interview where I talk about both my published books, and even ran a giveaway of The Ebb, willing to gift copies off Amazon directly to two lucky winners! This site, RobsessedPattinson.com has 117K followers on Twitter and another 14K on Facebook, and they posted about this interview ceaselessly on both platforms! What can I say about these guys? They’re the best! You can find their post and giveaway here.

Having thanked both sites and shared the posts everywhere too, I am left speechless just thinking about it today, one week later. This has been a weird week! It just goes to show that sometimes, lucky breaks can come from anywhere. Of course, I am delighted to have found this wonderful niche as to spread the word about The Lady of the Pier trilogy, and my scheduled tweets on Socialoomph have now been enriched with all sorts of Robert Pattinson hashtags.

After all, I am not pretending. As I wrote The Lady of the Pier, I always pictured Rob playing my favorite scenes of Christian and Danny inside my head. Rob is my inspiration in general when I write romance. He is also Phevos in The Necklace of Goddess Athena in this Rpatz-besotted mind of mine. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always followed my dreams and my passions in life. If my soft spot for RPatz has got me a few sales, it has to mean something.

That is not to say that I believe it’ll carry on necessarily. Maybe it was just a pretty firework that’s already starting to fade. But even so, what a pretty firework it was! I am celebrating my weird Rpatz  week by watching him in a movie today – my only problem is which one to choose as I have so many favorites! If any RPatz fans are reading this, what do you think guys? I am thinking Water for Elephants or Bel Ami…

Before I go, to say the giveaway on RobsessedPattinson.com will be open for another couple of days. You can enter here for a chance to win a kindle copy of The Ebb gifted to you from Amazon by those truly amazing guys!

#love and #gratitude to: Kelly Smith Reviews, Flavia from Argentina (my Twitter follower who spread the word), the site admins, and the fellow Rob fans who took a chance on my book, simply because I pictured RPatz in it!

News on The Lady of the Pier trilogy

west pier6Hello peeps! I am very excited to announce today that I’ve now finished writing the first draft of The Storm, the last book in The Lady of the Pier trilogy. I still can’t believe it’s done. This has been a complex project that has required a staggering amount of research, mainly because I wanted to record life in Brighton in WWII and to tell the actual story of The West Pier throughout.

Also, I had to deal with two separate timelines that had to blend into one in the concluding volume. Basically it was like writing two separate trilogies at the same time, something that I found daunting plenty of times along the way. In the end, I wrote the stories of Sofia and Laura as two separate books, and then combined them on each volume. I am feeling dizzy just thinking about it – but it is a story very close to my heart, and I think it was worth every bit of the complexity I had to deal with.

Needless to say, for my next project, I am thinking of something light-hearted that requires no research at all, just to give myself a break! I am thinking of trying my hand with a chick-lit story next time, and just because normality bores me, I guess I’ll have to put into the mix some kind of supernatural, whimsical element again, just to keep me interested!

Now, a great offer and some more info on the trilogy:

lady of the pier, ebb no strap 533x800

Book 1, The Ebb, is currently 99c on Amazon USA only. Grab a copy before the offer ends! This is the most light-hearted among the three volumes, and it will please lovers of sweet romance and beach romance.

lady of the pier, flow,533x800

In Book2, The Flow, life takes a very tragic turn for Laura. This book is predominantly a drama, and also has ample historical and paranormal elements. Look out for it this summer, or better yet, sign up to my newsletter to hear it first when this book is launched!

Lady of the Pier, storm 533X800

Book 3, The Storm, is where the two parallel timelines merge into one. To make it possible, I had to intensify the paranormal element to the max! The spookiness is off the charts here, and I hope lovers of the paranormal among you will enjoy it. If you sign up to the newsletter, I’ll make sure to notify you towards the end of the year when this book is released.

All in all, I think I have created a series of three books where each one has a totally different feel. Some readers may find The Flow shockingly dramatic, but as I told my biggest fan, my step-daughter Stephanie, no matter how much devastation Laura goes through, I promise the trilogy will have a perfectly happy ending.

I hope you will enjoy The Lady of the Pier trilogy, should you decide to give it a try. I expect The West Pier’s exceptional story will fascinate you if you do, just like it has charmed me, enough to want to tell it.
