FREE books, pink skies and more feline naughtiness!

In an earlier post. I showed you Sissi’s currently preferred spot for catching birds. My husband took this photo the other day when he ventured outside, first thing in the morning. He took it to show me the small bits of feathers that were scattered everywhere before clearing it all up. Thankfully, he saved me from the sight of the poor birdie itself. By the time he’d found it it was much too late to change its sad fate.

On a happier note, here is a feeder my husband rustled up for Sissi and her mother, Loulou, so they could get some sustenance during our short breaks away from home last month. This meant we only had to ask our kindly neighbour to replenish the water bowl. Sissi went in straight to the feeder to eat when we placed it outside the first time, while Loulou, always skittish and over-careful, took a few moments to be convinced to go near it, let alone eat. Once she realized it had neither claws nor teeth, she was fine haha

In my latest newsletter, I am sharing a bunch of alluring photos, and even a short video, from the unforgettable experience I had of the sunset at Cape Sounio last month.

I make my newsletters fun by sharing photographs from my life in Greece and a bunch of kindle book freebies every time!

FREE books, sunny Greek photos, and a very naughty kitty!

Clever Sissi… but naughty too! (What’s new?)

This is Sissi’s favorite new spot for stalking little birdies. Usually in the morning, straight after her breakfast on the veranda, she will jump onto this pillar (or sit on the ground under this bush) and wait for the birdies to come. This bush is full of small black berries, not proper ones, as this is just a decorative bush (if that makes sense!) That said, I had a dog in the past that used to jump up high to eat these berries. I am guessing the birdies go on there often to taste them, and my clever little kitty has noticed.

It is often that my veranda fills with feathers and bits of wings in between breakfast and lunch while I’m busy on my computer. I guess a cat has to do what it has to do. I don’t judge.

As for Loulou, she’s taken to disappearing often after breakfast, most days skipping lunch and only showing up again for dinner. One day, she didn’t show up all day and I was really worried! So the next day I went out looking, calling out her name. Thankfully, I didn’t need to go far! Going to check on the first vertical street to ours, she responded by coming out to follow me home as soon as she heard me. It was just the third house down that street, an uninhabited dwelling. She probably goes there to sit all day to have some peace and quiet LOL

I’ve seen Sissi plenty of times chasing her mother Loulou for a wrestling match when the latter is not in the mood at all, hence responding viciously, then running away. I guess bad manners have repercussions even for cats! Sissi never likes to be alone, and meows desperately when she is. Let’s hope she works it out soon – why Mummy runs away, LOL! Only she can fix this 🙂

Loulou, basking in the sunshine, on a rare occasion when Sissi doesn’t feel inclined to vex her, LOL!

Fast tortoises, green bean stew and other fun news from Greece. FREE books for all too!

As it turns out, Aesop lied to us all. Tortoises are a lot faster than he would have us believe. I caught this little guy sprinting down the road Usein-Bolt-style the other day. I share this tortoise encounter along with another (a rather amusing one!) in my latest newsletter.

I packed it with pictures from my life in Greece and even included my traditional recipe for green bean stew. Perfect for the summer!

The secret is to use ripe beef tomatoes. It’s so sweet-tasting it’s unreal.

Check out the newsletter to see the lot, along with a plethora of free books for all!

Porphura: Mollusks with a royal secret

A mollusk with a gift for emperors and kings. Tasty too!

This type of purpura mollusk is called porphura (dated Greek word for ‘purple’, pronounced ‘porfeera’). In ancient times, these mollusks were used to extract the color purple, which was then used to dye the clothes of kings and emperors. The practice is 3,000 years old. ‘Porfeero’ is the Greek name of this special, royal shade of deep purple. Those with royal blood were once called ‘porfeerogenitos’ which means ‘born of the purple color’. According to Pliny, this color shade resembled coagulated blood. It is recorded in Homer’s works and in Greek mythology too. Zeus recognised and saved Perseus because he wore this color. Theseus proved that he was of royal descent by appearing dressed in this color before King Minos.

Nowadays, the use of the porphura mollusks to the Greeks is limited to being a meze, a rare one I presume, as perhaps it may be illegal to extract them from the sea for trade (like is definitely the case for ‘achinos’, i.e. sea urchins, and the oblong mollusks called ‘petrosolines’).

Still, porphuras often stick to the nets, and the fishermen tend to keep a few when that happens, just enough to enjoy with their ouzo 🙂

I got this small batch from a local fisherman once, as a gift. Never before in my life had I cooked so many and I hadn’t had them in decades. As a child, I was forever looking for porphuras during my swims in the local beaches. Back then, there were many in the shallows, simply sitting on the sand in plain sight. So, I’d catch just two or three, wash them well and boil them at home in a ‘briki,’ the tiny pot for Greek coffee. Then, I’d extract the flesh from the shells and eat it warm with a slice of bread.

As you can see in the photograph, something long and pointy is necessary to extract the flesh from the shell after they’ve been cooked. Those ouzo forks are the best for the job, but one can try with a tweezers too, though I don’t think it would prove as efficient. Smashing the shells after cooking them with a small rock is the last resort. In this case, it is necessary to wash the flesh well to make sure there are no remnants from the shell.

I don’t enjoy eating these cold, but others have them straight from the fridge – after boiling them, of course, because the flesh is very hard to eat raw. The more they boil, the softer they get. Allow at least 1 hour and up to 2 hours. Once cool, they can be kept in the fridge in a tub with olive oil and vinegar. They last for about a week or so. To have them warm straight after boiling, try them neat or with some lemon juice.

They’re also very nice with this dressing prepared in a blender: Olive oil, crushed garlic clove, lemon juice, parsley.

I can almost see some of you flinching right now, LOL! Not everyone would be willing to eat a mollusk, I guess. But, at least, now you know how the kings and queens of the past had their clothes dyed, huh! 😛
