A beautiful family house on Skyros Island

Kalimera, Greece lovers! I am writing this today to help out my dear friend, Amy, who is selling this beautiful family house on the stunning Greek island of Skyros. Actually, it comprises of two separate apartments, one on each floor.

Amy is half-Greek, half-British. Her father was a fisherman, and in this house Amy has spent wonderful times with her family over the years.

A snapshot from carefree fishing days for Amy and her father

Sadly, Amy’s father passed away last year and she and her siblings (none of whom live on the island currently) have made the tough decision to put their family home up for sale. It’s a largely spacious property, fully furnished, and at an idyllic location.

More information

A delightful 4-bedroom villa consisting of two separate apartments on the beautiful island of Skyros.

The two-floor property is located in the small village of Acherounes on a gently sloping hill and has stunning panoramic views of the sea and mountains. Acherounes beach is less than a five minute walk away and has a popular taverna during the holiday season.

The property provides 1,853 sqm of land and includes:

  • Two fully self-contained apartments measuring 67sqm each (one apartment on top of the other)

  • A separate building measuring 31sqm which would be ideal as a studio, workshop or for storage which is also supplied with running water and electricity

  • Ample parking for 4-5 cars

The two apartments are identical and each one contains:

  • 2 bedrooms

  • Fully fitted kitchen (electric cooker and hobs, tall fridge and plenty of storage space in cupboards)

  • Open living/dining area

  • A shower room with toilet

  • Luxurious marble flooring throughout (except bathroom which is tiled)

  • Plentiful veranda space

Most rooms benefit from dual-aspect windows (windows on at least two walls and facing more than one direction) which create a very well-lit property. The property faces west so the sun rises from behind the property in the morning and sets in front of the property in the evening. Both apartments have a large veranda at the front leading from the living/dining area, which are superb for entertaining. Small verandas lead from the kitchens and the master bedrooms. All verandas are ideal for enjoying the breathtaking views of the sea and to marvel at the majestic sunsets with privacy. There is also a large courtyard at the back of the downstairs apartment which has plenty of shade during summer afternoons.

The land and the garden areas are impressive and have shrubs and trees (including olive trees).

A buyer would be able to apply for the Greece Golden Visa scheme, entitling them and their family to live and work in Greece. Details can be found here.

As the property has been unoccupied for 18 months, the décor will require cosmetic updating and maintenance and the land and garden area will also require attention. This would make an excellent project for anybody looking to invest in a small renovation project whether they want to use the apartment as a permanent abode or as a holiday home.

Please note:

This property is being sold as seen, which includes various items belonging to the current owners that are included in the sale of the properties and surrounding land. This includes a Suzuki outboard boat engine, surfboards, 2-3 small boats and a small trailer.

What else is included in the sale?

The upstairs apartment is in very good condition and comes furnished with beds (one double bed in the master bedroom and two twin beds in the second bedroom) sofas, dining table and chairs as well as kitchen equipment (cooking utensils, plates etc) and bed linen and towels. Therefore, it can be moved into straight away. The downstairs apartment comes with a double bed and twin beds, dining table and chairs.

The studio is currently being used as a storage space for furniture (beds, cupboards, chest of drawers and many other miscellaneous items which will remain).

Price: €250,000  (euro)

Important locations and their distances from the property

The main port of Linaria is 1km away and is home to the stylish Kavos lounge bar, seafood restaurants and tavernas. Throughout the year, a ferry transports visitors between Linaria and the coastal town of Kymi (1-3 times daily). Kymi is only 2.5 hours by coach or car to Athens. During the summer months the ferry also visits the popular and picturesque islands of Skopelos (where the original Mamma Mia movie was filmed) and Alonissos.

Skyros town is 10km away and a great place to go to for a stroll or something to eat or drink in one of the restaurants, traditional tavernas or trendy bars.

Skyros airport is 21km away and operates between 1-3 domestic flights weekly to/from Athens as well as to/from Thessaloniki year round.

More about Skyros

Skyros sits in the middle of the Aegean Sea and is the southernmost island of the Sporades archipelago. It is where, according to Greek mythology, the local King, Lycomedes, threw Theseus to his death from a cliff top. Skyros is also where Achilles is believed to have set sail for Troy (now known as Achili Bay) after he was found in the court of Lycomedes by Odysseus.

Skyros has 130km of glorious coastline and consequently a wide variety of beaches. A selection of some of the most popular ones can be found here. Water sports are available on some beaches, with tavernas and bars in others, whilst many simply offer their crystal blue waters and golden sands.

Hiking and horse-riding are also available on the island, with miles of forestry, mountains and even caves to explore and many official trails include routes to more remote beaches which offer something totally different.

The winding roads of Skyros Town are a pleasure to stroll through, amongst its many eateries and artistic shops. Explore further and these roads will take you to the castle and the Byzantine monastery of Agios Georgis. The top of the town also proudly hosts a statue commemorating the British poet Rupert Brooke, who was buried on the island during WWI. Every year during the Greek carnival season when spring beckons, Skyros Town does not fail to disappoint with its own Goat Festival which dates back to the Dionysian celebrations of Ancient Greece, leaving onlookers spellbound. The sound of goat bells – often up to seventy kilos on one belt – are wrapped around the waists of young men dressed in goatskins and the result when they whirl themselves around is enchanting.

The rich culture and history of the island can be seen in the Faltaits Foklore museum and artifacts which have been found from excavations on the island are housed in the Archaeological Museum.

Skyros even has its own breed of miniature horses which have lived on the island for thousands of years. There are farms that you can visit which allow you to see these unique creatures up close.

Many of the island’s tavernas are so popular with the locals that they remain open year-round. The large community of fishermen is evident, as a variety of delicious dishes are available, the fish having recently been caught on one of the small traditional wooden fishing boats. A wide variety of Greek cuisine can be enjoyed at all the tavernas which cook with home-grown organic produce. Typical Greek fast food and snacks can be enjoyed at one of the Grill Houses or bakeries.
