Book review: Cannibal King by Nanine Case

When I was offered a chance to read an advanced reader’s copy of this book, I was dubious. Cannibals? Surely, it will have graphic violence in it! Not for me, I thought. But I was assured this book is about anything but violence. I am so glad I decided to give this a go because, had I not, I would have missed an absolute gem of storytelling.

In the 1830s, at the tender age of fourteen, John Rummel aches for adventure. One night, he runs away from home in New England and boards a south-Pacific-bound whaler as a member of the crew. Life on the ship is misery, though, as the captain is a very cruel man. John jumps ship and winds up a prisoner of the French, who occupy the Marquesas islands. Having made a precious new friend, he escapes from prison and winds up on another of the islands. There, he is introduced to a cannibal tribe, who befriend him. He spends many years living with them peacefully, learning their customs and their language and winds up having a romance with the seductive chief’s daughter, Princess Marita.

Marita’s love is not nurturing him, though. It becomes a poison in his heart and it threatens his life and the life of the whole tribe. Adventure and danger follow him everywhere, it seems, especially as there is an enemy cannibal tribe who hate him and, given half the chance, will betray him to the French, who never stopped looking for him since he escaped… But John, reluctant to return home for his own reasons, has grown to love this land and stays on. In time, he imparts precious new knowledge to the natives of the various tribes on the islands, and also teaches them a lesson that saves lives: to help one another rather than make war for the slightest cause…

This book is not about violence, nor does it contain graphic violence in the degree that one would expect of a book that has the word ‘cannibal’ in its title. It is really about a daring and intelligent man who, despite missing home, finds a new purpose living with savages and teaching them in ways that can help them without offending their own beliefs and customs. It’s also the sad tale of his painful love for Marita. Truly, a marvellous book, and I am so glad I had the chance to read it.

I miss its characters, and they stay on with me now, alive in my mind, days after ending the book. This is such a feat for this talented author! Her outstanding writing made every little detail of the tribes’ villages and customs come alive in my mind’s eye, as if I were on the Marquesas islands too. I hope this extraordinary tale winds up on TV or in the silver screen one day!

I shall definitely read more from this author. Highly recommended!

(I received a free advanced reader’s copy of this book, and I made the decision to review it as to support this talented author, and to help other readers discover it.)

My rating: 5 stars!

An enthralling exotic tale of mortal danger and romance that will stay with you.

FREE books, pink skies and more feline naughtiness!

In an earlier post. I showed you Sissi’s currently preferred spot for catching birds. My husband took this photo the other day when he ventured outside, first thing in the morning. He took it to show me the small bits of feathers that were scattered everywhere before clearing it all up. Thankfully, he saved me from the sight of the poor birdie itself. By the time he’d found it it was much too late to change its sad fate.

On a happier note, here is a feeder my husband rustled up for Sissi and her mother, Loulou, so they could get some sustenance during our short breaks away from home last month. This meant we only had to ask our kindly neighbour to replenish the water bowl. Sissi went in straight to the feeder to eat when we placed it outside the first time, while Loulou, always skittish and over-careful, took a few moments to be convinced to go near it, let alone eat. Once she realized it had neither claws nor teeth, she was fine haha

Murder mystery book review: Silent Strike by Melinda Colt

Wow, this was such an unputdownable murder mystery! And the dialogue so clever. I loved the interrogations especially. They made me really absorbed to the story and the mystery of it all. The detectives asked the exact questions I wanted to ask, LOL. So I felt like I was there in the room, participating. It was such a complex story, yet so easy to follow, the questions every twist raised filling up my head, deliciously tickling my curiosity, spurring me to keep turning the pages for more.

As for the romance, it was so intriguing, all the way to the final, delicious climax of it, and I really cared for these two characters. Heck, I even cared for some of the bad ones in the story!

Honestly, this was such a compelling read, definitely one to remember. The characters will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading. I wish there was a sequel to these adorable lovebirds. I must say, I thought I was blown away by Dare Game, but the author just raised the bar even higher 🙂

Highly recommended!

My review: 5 stars!

FREE books, sunny Greek photos, and a very naughty kitty!

Clever Sissi… but naughty too! (What’s new?)

This is Sissi’s favorite new spot for stalking little birdies. Usually in the morning, straight after her breakfast on the veranda, she will jump onto this pillar (or sit on the ground under this bush) and wait for the birdies to come. This bush is full of small black berries, not proper ones, as this is just a decorative bush (if that makes sense!) That said, I had a dog in the past that used to jump up high to eat these berries. I am guessing the birdies go on there often to taste them, and my clever little kitty has noticed.

It is often that my veranda fills with feathers and bits of wings in between breakfast and lunch while I’m busy on my computer. I guess a cat has to do what it has to do. I don’t judge.

As for Loulou, she’s taken to disappearing often after breakfast, most days skipping lunch and only showing up again for dinner. One day, she didn’t show up all day and I was really worried! So the next day I went out looking, calling out her name. Thankfully, I didn’t need to go far! Going to check on the first vertical street to ours, she responded by coming out to follow me home as soon as she heard me. It was just the third house down that street, an uninhabited dwelling. She probably goes there to sit all day to have some peace and quiet LOL

I’ve seen Sissi plenty of times chasing her mother Loulou for a wrestling match when the latter is not in the mood at all, hence responding viciously, then running away. I guess bad manners have repercussions even for cats! Sissi never likes to be alone, and meows desperately when she is. Let’s hope she works it out soon – why Mummy runs away, LOL! Only she can fix this 🙂

Loulou, basking in the sunshine, on a rare occasion when Sissi doesn’t feel inclined to vex her, LOL!

FREE books, an impromptu air show, an ancient temple and Lord Byron’s carving

Greece is having a summer for the books. After two devastating fires earlier this month in the Peloponnese and Evia that burnt thousands of acres of forest land, many homes, and even wiped out whole villages from the map, it was ‘our turn’ last week here in West Attica. A fire in the area of Villia blazed for five consecutive days, every day getting closer and closer to my seaside town near Athens, making everybody nervous. I do confess, I did pack, just in case. The only ray of sunshine we had last week was the swims at the local beach that daily came with a free air show! Both Erickson helicopters and Canadair planes kept coming over to refill. Even 6 Canadair planes at one time. And they all came and went perfectly synchronized. Everyone held their phones at the ready and I couldn’t help myself either.

GO HERE FOR A VIDEO OF TWO ERICKSON HELICOPTERS AND HERE FOR A VIDEO OF CANADAIR AIRPLANES FILLING UP FROM THE SEA TO FIGHT THE FIRE.

FREE books, sunny photos and an intrepid lady bug

In this idyllic location, my husband and I enjoyed a wonderful meal last weekend. Sitting in the cool breeze provided a temporary reprieve from the heatwave we’re having right now. It’s been plaguing us relentlessly for two straight weeks so far! So it was wonderful to feel cool by the water. Same reason why we went swimming in the evening this week, as opposed to the morning, and it was just heavenly. I tried going in the morning one day and just couldn’t handle sunbathing after 11 a.m! Felt like my skin was roasting so I got up and headed for home as if a tsunami were flowing in, LOL

That morning, something wonderful happened, though. I saw a lady bug floundering in the deep water and I saved it by scooping it up and taking it back to shore. Even more delightful than the whole experience was the reaction of an elderly local who watched me swim one-handed while keeping the bug out of the water with the other.

I share all the details of this incident in today’s newsletter, along with a bunch of FREE books, yes, FREE books for all! Also, sunny photos and even a video from that wonderful fish dinner by the sea. The cicadas never stopped singing from the trees. You have to have a listen!

Trust me, the newsletter is guaranteed to make you smile faster than you can say ‘calamari!’

A quick and easy dessert, FREE books and fun on the beach!

Hi, All! Today, I am thrilled to share my latest quick and easy dessert experiment in the kitchen as I try to find healthy alternatives to bought ice cream. And I am thrilled because I managed to make the perfect thing made of Greek yoghurt, that, somehow, tastes like chilled cake instead! Just yummy! I did try to store it in the freezer, and it was okay as an ice cream, but if kept in the fridge, the taste is a lot better.

The lady fingers (savoyard biscuits) in this recipe cause a taste explosion in the mouth, but only, as I stated earlier, if it’s kept in the fridge! The biscuits soak up the excess liquid from the yoghurt/sugar mix fully after 24 hours and it turns into something magical. You just have to try it!

Seafood pasta, fun Greek news and free books for all! #funnews #Greece #freebooks

What do you see in this pic? Clams, cockles or kedonia? Whatever you call them, they’re just as yummy! Scroll down for a fabulous pasta recipe that uses this delicious seafood!

My father has now gone to his homeland – the island of Limnos in the Northeast Aegean – to spend the summer there. He makes me jealous on most days by telling me he’s been to the beach for an evening walk and returned home with dinner – the odd big crab to enjoy with his ouzo!

During winter, My father made a new friend, Mr. Dimitris, who loves to harvest seafood from the seafront, here in our little town near Athens. As of the late spring, Mr. Dimitris would stop by to bring my father the odd thing, like the porphuras I mentioned in a previous blog post, or mussels. Now that it’s summertime, he goes harvesting every day and drops in about once a week, bearing gifts straight from the sea, this time to Andy and me, seeing that my father is away.

More often than not, he brings clams these days, much to my delight.

I’ve always had clams raw with a splash of lemon juice and bread. When I was a kid, my father was forever opening them for me with a knife and putting them on my plate saying, ‘Add plenty of lemon! It’ll kill the germs!’ It’s so embedded in my head by now I could never have them raw without the lemon haha. Actually, I suspect there’s truth in this as well!

Anyway, I decided to try something different this time. So I looked for pasta recipes online and found this awesome one for ‘Tartufi di Mare’ which means ‘Truffles of the Sea’ and that’s how the Italians call clams/cockles, apparently! Excited to learn something new, I looked into the recipe and it sounded wonderful. Clams, garlic, white wine, chilly… It just sounded perfect.

 GET THE RECIPE HERE

I’ve now enjoyed this meal a couple times and it was such a success that I had to blog it, after making my own changes that is – i.e. I played with the secondary ingredients a little and changed the steaming procedure as well.

The pasta tastes as if it’s coated in butter. It’s just mouth-wateringly delicious. You’ll just have to try the recipe to see what I mean!

Note: You can use small-size oysters instead (called ‘clams’ in the UK or ‘achivades’ in Greece). These have smooth shells and can have various colors.

The summer has officially started here at last! The sea is a little cool but so inviting, and the sun is scorching hot! We’re having a heatwave right now, temps as high as 40 degrees C. My husband took this photo of me last weekend. That was our first swim near home so it was a quick trip. There are many popular beaches in west Attica that are edged with pine forests, and we’ll be driving out a little further on the weekends from now on. Kineta, Agii Theodori, Alepochori, Psatha, Porto Germeno. So many choices 🙂

Porphura: Mollusks with a royal secret

A mollusk with a gift for emperors and kings. Tasty too!

This type of purpura mollusk is called porphura (dated Greek word for ‘purple’, pronounced ‘porfeera’).

In ancient times, these mollusks were used to extract the color purple, which was then used to dye the clothes of kings and emperors. The practice is 3,000 years old.

‘Porfeero’ is the Greek name of this special, royal shade of deep purple. Those with royal blood were once called ‘porfeerogenitos’ which means ‘born of the purple color’. According to Pliny, this color shade resembled coagulated blood. It is recorded in Homer’s works and in Greek mythology too. Zeus recognised and saved Perseus because he wore this color. Theseus proved that he was of royal descent by appearing dressed in this color before King Minos.

Nowadays, the use of the porphura mollusks to the Greeks is limited to being a meze, a rare one I presume, as perhaps it may be illegal to extract them from the sea for trade (like is definitely the case for ‘achinos’, i.e. sea urchins, and the oblong mollusks called ‘petrosolines’).

Still, porphuras often stick to the nets, and the fishermen tend to keep a few when that happens, just enough to enjoy with their ouzo 🙂

I got this small batch from a local fisherman once, as a gift. Never before in my life had I cooked so many and I hadn’t had them in decades. As a child, I was forever looking for porphuras during my swims in the local beaches. Back then, there were many in the shallows, simply sitting on the sand in plain sight. So, I’d catch just two or three, wash them well and boil them at home in a ‘briki,’ the tiny pot for Greek coffee. Then, I’d extract the flesh from the shells and eat it warm with a slice of bread.

As you can see in the photograph, something long and pointy is necessary to extract the flesh from the shell after they’ve been cooked. Those ouzo forks are the best for the job, but one can try with a tweezers too, though I don’t think it would prove as efficient. Smashing the shells after cooking them with a small rock is the last resort. In this case, it is necessary to wash the flesh well to make sure there are no remnants from the shell.

I don’t enjoy eating these cold, but others have them straight from the fridge – after boiling them, of course, because the flesh is very hard to eat raw. The more they boil, the softer they get. Allow at least 1 hour and up to 2 hours. Once cool, they can be kept in the fridge in a tub with olive oil and vinegar. They last for about a week or so. To have them warm straight after boiling, try them neat or with some lemon juice.

They’re also very nice with this dressing prepared in a blender: Olive oil, crushed garlic clove, lemon juice, parsley.

I can almost see some of you flinching right now, LOL! Not everyone would be willing to eat a mollusk, I guess. But, at least, now you know how the kings and queens of the past had their clothes dyed, huh! 😛
