FREE books, sunny photos and an intrepid lady bug

In this idyllic location, my husband and I enjoyed a wonderful meal last weekend. Sitting in the cool breeze provided a temporary reprieve from the heatwave we’re having right now. It’s been plaguing us relentlessly for two straight weeks so far! So it was wonderful to feel cool by the water. Same reason why we went swimming in the evening this week, as opposed to the morning, and it was just heavenly. I tried going in the morning one day and just couldn’t handle sunbathing after 11 a.m! Felt like my skin was roasting so I got up and headed for home as if a tsunami were flowing in, LOL

That morning, something wonderful happened, though. I saw a lady bug floundering in the deep water and I saved it by scooping it up and taking it back to shore. Even more delightful than the whole experience was the reaction of an elderly local who watched me swim one-handed while keeping the bug out of the water with the other.

I share all the details of this incident in today’s newsletter, along with a bunch of FREE books, yes, FREE books for all! Also, sunny photos and even a video from that wonderful fish dinner by the sea. The cicadas never stopped singing from the trees. You have to have a listen!

Book review: Evora by Kostas Krommydas #bookreview #bookblogger #bookreviews

Ariadne operates a guest house on a Greek mountain village surrounded by magnificent forestland. One cold wintry night of below zero temperatures, Antonis, a stranger to her, saves her from a freezing lake. Later that night, as she recuperates in Antonis’s guest house, she starts to feel a deep connection to him, but, as he is married, she does not encourage the feeling. Soon, as one would expect, he leaves her life anew, as swiftly as he had appeared.

Years later, he appears at her guest house out of the blue, now divorced, and the same deep feeling of connection reemerges in Ariadne’s heart… This time, it seems the feeling is reciprocated, and Ariadne soon finds herself sharing her deep love for her part of the world with him. With the company of her beloved dog, who doesn’t need any encouragement to follow her into the woods, Ariadne takes Antonis down her favourite forest paths, and the beauty of nature renders him enchanted. Together, they eat juicy fruit from the trees, and then wander into other places in the forest, less wholesome ones that hide mortal danger in the shape of a roaming pack of wolves… Yet, it seems the wolves hold more nobility and higher values than the men who, without regard, enter the forest one day, about to change Ariadne’s life forever…

This highly dramatic romance will remain forever indelible on my mind, as well as the plethora of images of the forest… The descriptions took me there effortlessly, and I felt like I was walking beside Ariadne and Antonis. I saw the fervour in their eyes as their gazes met, I felt the cool of the river waters and of the shade provided by the dense foliage overhead. With every step these fully fledged characters made, I heard the soft cracking of twigs underfoot as I mentally followed. And, all the while, the forest seemed to come alive for me, and it felt like a character too, having a consciousness and a purpose of its own.

All in all, this book was a magical experience and I urge you to try it. You will thank yourselves for giving this book a try. I believe that, upon reading this book, your heart will forever stay in part in that forest, and you’ll want to visit the forestland of mainland Greece, high up in the mountains, for real. I know this book made me want to explore this part of my country more. Well done, Kostas Krommydas, for another riveting, heartrending read!

A marathon race in Nafplio inspired my Greek novel, Running Haunted

Nafplio was the first capital of Greece after the country’s War of Independence in the 1820s against Turkish rule. As a result, it is a town steeped in history, an element that is present in every corner of the old town center, with its grand neoclassical buildings and the magnificent Venetian fortress, Palamidi, that dominates the town’s skyline with its unparalleled charm. Not to forget, of course, the picturesque waterfront. The tiny fortress of Bourtzi, set in the water like a jewel and a silent sentinel, is an idyllic landmark that visitors love to marvel at from the multitude of cafes and restaurants lining the port.

Thought I’d share today some photos from a special weekend break in this magnificent town, which took place a few years back. It was the weekend of the annual Nafplio Marathon race, plus it was in March, very close to Independence Day (March 25). The Greek flags decorating the picturesque lanes of Nafplio added to their inherent charm a touch of national pride.

During our weekend break, my husband and I made sure to walk around the town a lot, to take in the incredible energy of it all, and to fill our minds with the serenity of the setting.

Saturday was a quiet day, but Sunday was a celebration! The town came alive with big crowds that stood expectant and music blaring from massive speakers. The annual Marathon race of Nafplio, a highly successful event, took place that morning, sending both runners and cyclists on a series of races around town and its outskirts to be cheered by excited spectators.

As opposed to the Athens marathon that’s regarded one of the most difficult to participate in (because its last stretch is a continuous climb uphill), the Nafplio marathon proved to be much easier for my husband, who ran the race, seeing that the ground was flat throughout.

Strolling around Nafplio is a unique experience. Magnificent squares, such as Syntagma (Constitution) and Trion Navarchon (Three Admirals), picturesque lanes, cafes and tavernas, curio shops and smart boutiques attract the eye in every corner. Surely, a photographer’s paradise.

For the enthusiasts of history, there is a lot to see and explore. Other than the Archeological museum and the Mosque (that housed the first parliament of Greece after the War of Independence), there are three historical forts around town.

Palamidi is, by far, the most magnificent, set atop a high peak that overlooks Nafplio. On a lower peak beside it, stands the fort of Akronafplia, and last but not least, the tiny fort of Bourtzi is, hands down, the most enchanting, seeing that it’s built on a tiny island at a short distance from the seafront. On a peaceful, sunny day, it’s a mesmerizing sight, seemingly floating on the water like a peaceful, off-white bird.

To me, it is no surprise that my great love for Nafplio, coupled with the delightful experience of that Marathon weekend there, in time inspired to write a novel – my romantic comedy, Running Haunted. And, in it, I unfold the allure of Nafplio in all its glory.

The book tells the story of Kelly Mellios, a marathon runner, who visits Nafplio to run the race and winds up getting hired to run a house. With a ghost in it!

MORE INFO:

The stunning and athletic Kelly Mellios runs a marathon in the alluring Greek town of Nafplio and winds up getting hired as a housekeeper by Alex Sarakis, a charming hotelier. Alex lives with his three underage children and a quirky pug, but no one knows there’s an extra inhabitant in the house… It’s the ghost of Alex’s late wife that lingers on with a secret plan.

When Kelly finds out the house is haunted, she freaks out at first, but then finds herself itching to help the ghost settle its unfinished business. It is evident there’s room for improvement in this family… Plus, her growing attraction towards Alex is overpowering…

Will Kelly do the ghost’s bidding? How will it affect her? And just how strange is this pug?

Running Haunted: My new book is a romantic comedy with a ghost #paranormal #romance #Greek

Yes! Thrilled to present today my new novel on Amazon. It is set in the charming Greek town of Nafplio and features a marathon runner, a widower with three underage kids, a quirky pug, and a ghost!

Here’s the book description:

Kelly ran a marathon… and wound up running a house. With a ghost in it.

Kelly Mellios is a stunning, athletic woman, who has learned—the hard way—to value herself. Having just finished her first marathon in the alluring Greek town of Nafplio, she bumps into Alex, a gorgeous widower with three underage children, who is desperately looking for a housekeeper.

The timing seems perfect, seeing that Kelly aches to start a new life, and Nafplio seems like the ideal place to settle down. She accepts the position on the spot, but little does she know that Alex’s house has an extra inhabitant that not even the family knows about…

The house is haunted by Alex’s late wife, who has unfinished business to tend to. By using the family pet, a quirky pug named Charlie, the ghost is able to communicate with Kelly and asks her for help. She claims she wants to ensure her loved ones are happy before she departs, but offers very little information about her plans.

Kelly freaks out at first, but gradually finds herself itching to help. It is evident there’s room for improvement in this family… Plus, her growing attraction towards Alex is overpowering…

Will Kelly do the ghost’s bidding? How will it affect her? And just how strange is this pug?

The book is on pre-order at a special price of only $0.99!

Book review: Dominion of the Moon by Kostas Krommydas

Oh my! Having read and enjoyed Cave of Silence by this fine author I started reading Dominion of the Moon expecting a good read and the same sort of book, but I’ve experienced so much more! Highly mystical and mysterious, this book had me riveted from the first few pages. My father hails from the Greek island of Limnos and I’ve visited the Kaviria archeological site there – it’s similar to the one described in the book at Samothraki where Kavirian Mysteries were also said to be held in antiquity. Therefore, being already familiar with these dark ancient gods, I was fascinated by the story of the cult and its secret gatherings, and felt totally immersed in it.

The romance was sweet and tender, both in the case of the tragic archeologist and his grandson all those years later. Tragedy and hardship struck the former repeatedly in his life and I followed it all with a broken heart. I felt so close to this character and ached for the catharsis in the end that would see the members of the cult paying for their evil deeds.

The ending, as painful as it was for some of the characters, was utterly satisfying. I highly recommend this fresh, original story. The emotions it stirred in me as I read ebbed and flowed in my heart like the tide, exploding at times like a raging storm, similarly to that very special scene in the book.

The island of Samothraki comes alive through the pages, making me want to visit it at first opportunity. The love of Kostas Krommydas for this island is palpable and utterly magnetic.
